a note from alicia

PYP started, like most things in my life, with a text. It was my first summer in Chicago and I text a friend “It’s perfect outside! Let’s go to the beach!”

She text back “Hell NO, I can’t do that. I have to lose 10 pounds first!”

This person loved the beach more than anyone I knew, and yet she wouldn’t do the thing she loved. Why?  Why on earth would someone deprive themselves of something they loved?

When I think of why I do this work, I think of this conversation.  I think of the thousands of conversations like this one that I have had over the years.  People, including myself, saying “NO” to things that bring them pleasure in their lives.  Why do we do that to ourselves?  How can we identify when we are do this to ourselves? And how do stop ourselves?

These are complicated questions, with multiple answers.  And getting to the root cause may take years.

In the meantime, I offer you a gift a teacher once gave to me; I give you permission to feel good.  We deserve to feel good.  We deserve to experience pleasure.  We deserve to pursue joy.
